Bonnie Bells of Heather

“From the bonny bells of heather,
They brewed a drink long syne,
Was sweeter far than honey,
Was stronger far than wine.”

Robert Louis Stevenson opens Heather Ale: A Galloway Legend with the stanza above, and goes on to tell the legend of a heated battle and betrayal, all for a secret ale recipe.

The Joy of this painting lies in the evocation the sweet heather blooms in lavender and pink, with pops of light orange—bringing alive memories of walks on the heath and highlands.
