Mark's Craft

Mark, a locally renowned impressionist landscape artist, began his journey in the art world with a four-year graphics degree from Watford College of Art, followed by a career in graphic design. After relocating from London to Suffolk in 2018, the expansive countryside and ever-changing colors and light inspired him to start painting landscapes.

His art is created with unique, handmade brushes crafted from twigs, stalks, and other natural materials found in the landscapes he depicts. In a sense, the landscape is used to paint the landscape, and the brush becomes an integral part of the story. Thus, the brush is sold as an essential component of the artwork and should be displayed with the painting.

These handmade brushes introduce unpredictability, expressed through spontaneous scratching, dragging, and dabbing of the paint as the brush moves energetically across the surface. Mark strives to capture the sensitivity, drama, and mood of a place, aiming to connect the viewer to the scene. The natural colors must feel united through unifying shades of shifting light, creating a spirit of optimism.
